Frank Lampard has been appointed as Coventry’s head coach, returning to the dugout 18 months after leaving Chelsea. He succeeds Mark Robins, who was fired after nearly eight years in charge, with the club 17th in the Championship and two points above the relegation zone.
Lampard has been out of coaching since leaving his interim position with Chelsea at the end of 2022-23. That was the former England midfielder’s third Premier League managerial job in a row, following stints at Chelsea and Everton, but he is familiar with the Championship.
Lampard began his coaching career in the division with Derby in 2018 and led them to the playoff finals in his debut season. His first Coventry game will be on Saturday at home against Cardiff, who are one point behind. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and will be assisted by Joe Edwards and Chris Jones, with whom he has previously worked.

Lampard will have a press conference on Thursday afternoon. Between December 14 and January 1, Coventry will play five games against four of the seven teams currently behind them: Hull, Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Cardiff. Hull are looking for a new manager after sacking Tim Walter on Wednesday.
