Newcastle United has shown interest in Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, according to The Athletic.
Middlesbrough is no stranger to interest in its top assets, and as the January transfer window approaches, speculation about the fate of their key players is unavoidable.
Hayden Hackney, a midfielder, has long been seen as a promising prospect. After a loan spell at Scunthorpe United, the 22-year-old secured a place in the first team, and barring injuries, he has been a regular ever since.
The midfielder has seven goals and six assists in 83 Boro games and has played for England’s U21s in recent years.
Now, ahead of January, The Athletic has reported new reports of interest in the Middlesbrough ace.
According to reports, Premier League club Newcastle United has ‘watched’ Hackney as they consider targets for the January transfer window. It is unclear whether they will make a move for the Redcar-born ace, but he is on St. James’ Park’s radar.
Previous sources have stated that Boro has no intention of cashing in on Hackney or any of their other major assets, but this does not guarantee that their commitment will not be tested.
Key to the promotion push.
Hackney is one of the players that will be crucial in Middlesbrough’s bid to reach the Premier League. The club has previously demonstrated that they are not scared to sell their major assets if the proper offer comes in.
Morgan Rogers moved to Aston Villa last winter, although Boro negotiated a hard bargain. However, it appears that they are more likely to issue a ‘not for sale’ notice this winter.
Carrick will be eager to make it to the play-offs after last year’s disappointment and keeping their star men will be key to that. It will be tough to replace their major assets if sold in January and an exit for someone like Hackney would give Boro a big task of replacing him in a tricky window.
The run to January
Carrick and his Middlesbrough side are at the start of the hectic winter schedule. It could be key in the bid to win promotion from the Championship.
They hope to rebound from their setback to Hull City this weekend, which came after Blackburn Rovers snapped their three-game winning streak on Wednesday. Following Tim Walter’s dismissal, the Tigers will be managed by a caretaker.
The fixtures leading up to Christmas include matches against Burnley, Leeds United, Millwall, and Plymouth Argyle, followed by a Boxing Day home game against Sheffield Wednesday. They will then face Burnley once more at the conclusion of 2024.
