The Texas coach was spotted chasing down players who ran for the logo. After Texas defeated Texas A&M 17-7 in their rivalry game, some Longhorns wanted to celebrate on the Aggies’ logo at Kyle Field. However, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian intervened immediately to prevent this from happening.
In a video captured by CBS Austin’s Bob Ballou, Sarkisian can be seen chasing down players who were sprinting to the logo in the middle of the field and flailing his arms to tell them to stop. Chaos was avoided, but several wondered why Sarkisian wouldn’t want his players to rejoice on the logo, as many teams do after winning a huge rivalry game.
Sarkisian justified his actions in the postgame interview, noting what transpired earlier that day at the Ohio State-Michigan game as the primary reason. That rivalry game ended in a massive confrontation when Michigan planted its flag on Ohio State’s field, and cops pepper-sprayed some of the players. Sarkisian did not want this to happen under his watch.
“Rivalries are fun, but there’s a way to win with dignity, and I just didn’t believe it was the appropriate thing to do. We should not be on their logo. Sarkisian remarked, “We shouldn’t be planting flags on their logo.” “And I hope to receive the same respect in return when that day comes.
“I just think there’s a way we can teach our athletes how to run our business. We celebrate beside one another. This is not about any other team. It is about what we do. And I believe there is a way to win through class, and I’m hoping that we can continue to learn how to do so.” The Longhorns found other ways to celebrate their victory, including in the locker room after they departed the field. Texas finished the regular season 11-1 and now awaits the College Football Playoff.
