The Puerto Rican pitcher missed nearly all of 2023 due to shoulder surgery. Pitcher Frankie Montas will try to recapture his form in MLB after a terrible 2024 season, and he has joined the New York Mets.
Montas, who was in the Cy Young voting in 2021, got shoulder injury, limiting him to only one game for the Yankees in 2023. He had a quiet season in 2024 with the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.
Mets bolster their starting rotation
The Mets have now reached an agreement with the Dominican, signing him to a two-year, $34 million contract to strengthen the team’s starting rotation, according to The Post.
The New York Yankees are trying to upgrade their starting rotation after purchasing Sean Manaea and Luis Severino for very inexpensive costs and enjoying rebound seasons, so the 31-year-old Montas will be the one to try to resuscitate his career in Queens.
The contract is awaiting a physical exam for the Caribbean pitcher, who placed sixth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2021 but only appeared in one game for the New York Yankees in 2023 due to right shoulder surgery.
Last year, he had a combined 4.84 ERA
30 begins with the Reds and Brewers. However, Montas’ performance did not improve with his health, with a 1.367 WHIP and 3.9 walks per nine innings. He performed well late in the 2024 season, striking out 70 batters in 57 1/3 innings of work after being traded to the Brewers.
Montas joins an incomplete Mets rotation led by Kodai Senga and featuring David Peterson, Tylor Megill, Jose Butto, and Paul Blackburn.
Jose Quintana, Manaea, and Severino, who helped lead the club to the National League Championship Series following poor seasons with their respective organizations, are now free agents. Montas’ contract is similar to the one Manaea received last summer. Manaea made $14.5 million in one year, emerging as an ace on the mound and receiving Cy Young votes, before declining his player option for the next season after effectively raising his worth. Surely, Montas aspires to do the same.
