FA Cup draw – Three teams Wolves would love to play in third round and two they’ll want to avoid

Wolves will learn their opponents for the third round of the FA Cup when the draw is made on Monday night.

Last season was almost perfect for Gary O’Neil’s team, as they advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Wolves were defeated by Coventry City in the quarter-finals, denying O’Neil a trip to Wembley Stadium in his debut season at Molineux.

Late goals from the Championship outfit may have contributed to the start of Wolves’ awful run of form, but there is hope that better luck will be found in the cup this year.

Wolves would prefer three teams in the FA Cup third round draw.

West Bromwich Albion
Last season’s cup run was remarkable for a lot of reasons, but none more so than Wolves’ derby victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns. The match was as fierce as they come, with the visitors leaving with a ticket to the next round.

West Brom were punished for their crowd problems against Wolves, highlighting what was a historic day for the Old Gold and something the squad would undoubtedly want to repeat. Everton
Moving on, Wolves may fancy Everton, given O’Neil’s individual record against the Merseyside giants.

O’Neil has a better record against Everton than any other team in his managerial tenure, having won four of his five matches with them.

The relegation candidates have had some bad luck in the FA Cup over the last two seasons, reaching the fourth round last season and the third the year before.

Coventry City

O’Neil saw his team give their everything against Coventry in the quarter-finals last season, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Sky Blues from progressing.

Wolves were on the verge of a trip to Wembley Stadium, but it was not to be, which may push the Old Gold to seek retribution against Frank Lampard’s new side.

Currently 16th in the Championship following a bad start to the season, this appears to be a good time to play Lampard’s adjusting squad, providing an ideal opportunity for retaliation.

Wolves’ FA Cup record against Arsenal and Leeds United.

While there are certain teams Wolves will hope to be drawn against, there are others that O’Neil would prefer to avoid.

Molineux News chose Arsenal and Leeds United as the two clubs against which the Midlands giants have a terrible FA Cup record. While the Gunners are a contender for the Premier League championship, Wolves may dread Mikel Arteta’s team more in the FA Cup.

Wolves have lost more FA Cup games to Arsenal than any other club, but they are not the only team the Old Gold have had problems with.

Leeds United also offer a threat in the cup, with Wolves losing three of their six games against the Whites in the competition.
