JUSST IN : Frank Lampard answers ‘battle-hardened warrior’ question from Coventry City players.

Frank Lampard has commented on Coventry City’s lack of experience in a group that is very young and fresh.

The Sky Blues’ new manager named his starting lineup on Saturday, and the squad rallied twice from behind to earn a late point at home against Cardiff City. Fans have long complained that the squad has lacked leadership and influence from senior players since the departures of Kyle McFadzean, Liam Kelly, Matty Godden, and Kasey Palmer. However, the club’s commercial philosophy has seen City sign young players with the intention of developing into elite talents with resale value.

Lampard was reminded that during his time at Derby County, he had one or two young players who were also battle-hardened, and he was asked whether he believes his recently inherited team lacks that, not just in terms of age but also in terms of warrior spirit.Kyle mcfadzean hi-res stock photography and images - Alamy

“I think you can definitely work on the collective spirit and players can grow very quickly,” he remarked after the 2-2 tie at CBS Arena, “but you can’t compare different squads.”

“I’ve worked with balanced groups of varying ages, and modern football may produce some young squads. People are attempting to acquire young athletes and instill quality and value in them, and I understand that strategy. That is not a criticism; I came into this knowing exactly what it is.”Our group includes both young and veteran players. A handful of the youngsters were on the bench today, and when I picked the team, I knew it was young, but I had to go with what I saw.”

The outfield squad’s senior statesmen are midfielders Jamie Allen (29) and full-back Jake Bidwell (31), while goalkeeper Ben Wilson (32) – who is presently injured – is the oldest player on the roster.

But Lampard aims to pass on some of his own knowledge to his young players, saying: “I have a lot of experience, and one of the responsibilities of my job is not to be sitting here in three months telling you the same thing.” You’ll probably remind me if I repeat the same thing, but it’s my responsibility to show them the minor things, and they’re a nice set of people that want to learn and improve. They do not want to be in this condition; they want to get higher.
