In just a few days, the Texas Longhorns will have another shot at the only team to beat them during the regular season. In their first season in the SEC, the Longhorns have advanced to the SEC Championship Game, where they will meet the Georgia Bulldogs. When the two teams met earlier this season, Kirby Smart’s side easily defeated Texas 30-15. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian understands that his squad is in for a struggle. “It’s a very good football team on the road — essentially a road game for us going to Atlanta to play Georgia — so we’ve got to pack the things necessary to put ourselves in position to have some success Saturday,” Sarkisian
said via ESPN. A significant portion of that success will most certainly rest on the arm of quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has been dealing with an ankle issue for the previous two weeks. The top quarterback played against Texas A&M and appeared to be in good shape when he returned to practice this week. Before the rematch against Georgia, Ewers received some exciting news. He is a finalist for the Manning Award, which was established by the Allstate Sugar Bowl to recognize the college football exploits of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning and is given to the nation’s top quarterback.
Ewers is one of ten finals, including his opponent, Carson Beck. “It’s been another fun year of college football,” Archie Manning stated. “We’ve seen some outstanding quarterback performances at all levels, and the fact that 36 different players received votes to be Manning Award finalists demonstrates the depth of the position across the country. This year, we’ll be able to follow many of them through the newly enlarged College Football Playoff, so there’s plenty more football left to play. No matter what happens, I’m confident we’ll have another excellent winner of the Manning Award after all of the playoff games.” Ewers has completed more than 67% of his throws this season for 2,307 yards and 24 touchdowns Seven interceptions.
