The Cleveland Guardians are re-signing a previous Cy Young winner for at least another season.
According to various sources, the Guardians and pitcher Shane Bieber have agreed to a contract to retain him with the organization. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Bieber has agreed to a two-year contract worth $26 million, with the second year being a player option with a $4 million buyout. The 29-year-old Bieber has spent his entire career with Cleveland and will remain there. The 2020 AL Cy Young winner has a lifetime 3.22 ERA and was the star of the Guardians’ staff before being hindered by injury during the last two seasons. He had Tommy John surgery immediately at the beginning of the 2024 season.
This will certainly keep him out until midseason. A $30 million payday from a team with which he is already familiar is a solid contract, especially given that he can become a free agent after 2025 if he returns and pitches effectively.
After winning the AL Central, the Guardians could look very different next season. They feared losing Bieber as well, but he will return and pitch for them at some point.
