Viktor Gyokeres is currently one of the hottest properties in international football, yet just under 18 months ago, he was playing in the Championship with Coventry City.
Gyokeres joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2021, becoming a permanent Coventry player in July 2021 after failing to break into the Seagulls’ senior squad.
He went on to become one of the Championship’s greatest players during his tenure at the CBS Arena, attracting interest from numerous major clubs across Europe due to his spectacular exploits in front of goal.
The Stockholm-born striker quickly joined Portuguese giants Sporting CP last summer, and he has since improved to become one of the best forwards in recent Primeira Liga history, with his unstoppable goal-scoring exploits making him one of the sport’s most sought-after players.
His recent form has sparked speculation about a return to the Premier League for a fee of around £80 million, and with the help of Capology, Football League World has decided to compare his annual salary at the Estádio José Alvalade to what he earned in a year at Coventry
José Alvalade, and how that compares to his annual salary at Coventry.
It is important to note that Capology’s numbers are estimates rather than official figures.
Viktor Gyokeres’ annual salary at Sporting vs. Coventry City
According to Capology’s projections, Gyokeres earns €2,400,000 each year at Sporting, based on his claimed current weekly wages of €46,154.
The Swedish international signed a four-year contract with the Portuguese giants in July 2023, and his wages at the club will be roughly €9.6 million if his contract expires, but a wage increase appears likely if he maintains his remarkable goal-scoring record.
It should come as no surprise that what the 26-year-old was making with the Sky Blues pales in comparison to his current pay package, with Capology calculating that he received an annual salary of €216,577 when playing at the CBS Arena, which equates to about €4,165 per week.
That means his salary were enhanced tenfold by moving to the Primeira Liga from Coventry, and his move has clearly paid dividends both on and off the pitch thus far.
Viktor Gyokeres’ earnings at Sporting compared to the current top salaries in Coventry City.
Gyokeres’ earnings at Coventry were not only among the lowest in their squad at the time, but also among the lowest in the Championship during his time in England; however, his wages have since increased, and his stock is as high as ever; his annual salary now exceeds that of every player in the Sky Blues’ current squad.
According to Capology’s predictions, the biggest earner in the Coventry team for the 2024/25 season is centre-back Luis Binks, who earns an estimated £30,000 per week, or £1.56 million annually.
Gyokeres’ earnings, even when converted to pounds rather than euros, put him ahead of the 23-year-old at his new club, with weekly earnings of €46,154 equivalent to roughly £38,197 and an annual income of €2,400,000 equivalent to around £1,986,000.
Coventry’s top goal-scoring threat this season, USA international Haji Wright, is the Sky Blues’ current joint-second highest earner according to Capology, earning roughly £25,000 per week alongside fellow frontman Ellis Simms.
