City’s terrible streak continued with another defeat at home, leaving them at the bottom of the Championship. Andy Dawson feels the appointment of new manager Ruben Selles will be the catalyst for Hull City’s season, after his two-game caretaker term ended in a dismal 1-0 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers.
City dominated much of the game in hot circumstances at the MKM Stadium, but Rovers took the lead after only 20 minutes when Callum Brittain’s cross hit Sean McLoughlin and cannoned into the back of the net. The toothless Tigers were unable to get back into the contest.
It was the Tigers’ sixth consecutive defeat, leaving them at the bottom of the table, two points short of safety after 19 games of what has been a dismal start to the new season, leaving Selles, who takes over on Monday, with a massive assignment to prevent what appears to be a slide into League One. Dawson had previously stated that Lady Luck was not shining on City this season, and it was evident again when Rovers went 80 minutes without an attempt at goal while leading 1-0.
“It will change for us,” Dawson explained to Hull Live. “We just told the guys in there (the changing room), and we’ve told them before: there are no excuses. It cannot be; you create your own luck.
And everything will go our way. I’m sure you’ll have conversations in the next two, three, or four weeks, ideally about how things went our way, but listen, that’s football, right?We’ve all been in this for a long time, and things have both gone our way and against us. In terms of performance, particularly in the first half, I felt the lads were outstanding, and they delivered all we wanted of them.
“The football was good, quick, and we generated opportunities. What we want to know is, when a team comes off the field, did they defend well? I believe Blackburn did, particularly in the two excellent blocks in the first half (to deny Chris Bedia
Abou Kamara).
“That’s to their credit.” What we need to do is maintain getting into those communities, bringing people in, and providing opportunities for them. At some time, we’ll get a ricochet and something will go in, hopefully kicking off our season.” While Dawson was eager to discuss the positives of the performance, he is also fully aware that City is now at the bottom of the league, which is a risky place at any stage of the season, particularly as we approach the crucial Christmas period.
“We played well, but we didn’t deal with that moment,” he stated. “They’re the small details that either work for or against you. That is something we must address more effectively. Can we make a yard tighter?
They had one very good play in the first 20-25 minutes.
“They’ve switched it wide, and if we recover quickly enough and get into the appropriate places, then you’ll make your own luck. That’s our duty as players, as well as theirs, to keep working, knowing, and being in positions where we can cope with those situations much better.”
