Teden Mengi, a Luton defender, is expected to miss several months after suffering a freak knee injury during training last week.
The 22-year-old, who sparkled in Town’s Premier League campaign last season, has failed to replicate that success since relegation to the Championship this season, but he has remained a fixture in the Hatters’ XI, making 15 appearances and scoring once. Prior to Thursday afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Swansea City, Edwards announced he was missing two players owing to ‘freakish’ injuries, and with Mengi and Shandon Baptiste out of the starting lineup, it was evident they were the two in issue. When asked about the former Manchester United kid, Edwards stated: “Teden’s was a true weird one. He damaged his knee while executing a passing drill, just passing the ball. Unfortunately, he underwent an operation this morning and will be away for several months. Of course, we wish him well. It’s extremely disappointing right now, just another blow when we’re already on the ropes, and we took one during a game with Amari’i (Bell), so it’s been a rough period, but we’re battling. I understand that it is a challenge, but it also presents a chance for the next person.” On a probable timetable for Baptiste, Edwards explained: “Shandon felt his calf after the Norwich game and felt it again on Tuesday. He has done something to his calf; additional information on the duration will be provided as we progress. But he did something to his calf, as he felt in the game last week.” Regarding Bell, the manager said, “It looks like a hamstring to me.”
