Hannah Hidalgo and No. 8 Notre Dame beat No. 2 UConn 79-68 at home on Thursday night in South Bend.
Hidalgo, one of the top women’s college basketball players, led the way with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists in the win. Olivia Miles, a running companion, rolled her ankle early in the game but returned to score 16 points for the Irish. Liatu King also had 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win. But the story was Hidalgo’s performance, as she built on her outstanding freshman season a year earlier. Following the statement victory, Notre Dame’s social media account dubbed Hidalgo the finest two-way player in the country, which is difficult to refute given her defensive excellence and continuous offensive development. The win extended Notre Dame’s three-game winning streak,
which began with a 10-point overtime victory over No. 4 Texas last week. UConn’s standout Paige Bueckers scored 25 points in a losing effort, but the squad as a whole was troubled by 13 turnovers and a dismal 3-of-16 shooting from three.
