According to The News, Portsmouth will look to sign a center-back, a midfielder, and an attacking midfielder in January.
Portsmouth has had a difficult season to begin, but some of their recent performances have given them some much-needed hope of climbing out of the relegation zone. Prior to going four games unbeaten, Pompey had a poor record. However, that streak came to an end in terrible manner last Friday, when Derby County thrashed John Mousinho’s team 4-0 at Pride Park.
The setback was disappointing given the Rams’ recent form, but the south coast side can’t afford to be too down as they prepare for some vital games during the winter season.
The January window after that is another critical period. Portsmouth made a large number of acquisitions over the summer, but their effectiveness has been called into question.
Now, The News has identified three places Pompey is likely to prioritize this winter. According to reports, a central defender, defensive midfielder, and attacking midfielder would be sought. It will be hoped that players who can make an immediate impact be added, since the club focused on signing more developmental goals in the summer, which enraged some fans. Experience is needed.
Portsmouth’s emphasis on signing up-and-coming, lesser-known players during the summer transfer window surprised many people. That recruitment profile can be shrewd and provide significant market gains when others may miss out. However, after losing a number of veteran players with much experience over the summer, many thought that more needed to be added for the promotion to the Championship.
Except for a few, the majority of those signed were young, inexperienced hopefuls. At times, it appeared to be Pompey’s demise.
Experienced players with Championship-level or above pedigree are required to strengthen three important positions in the side’s spine. Seeing out 2024
After a challenging first half of the season, Portsmouth will be looking to finish the 2024 season on a strong note.
They have a difficult game to recover from their Derby County defeat, but will see an opportunity to gain a significant win when Frank Lampard’s Coventry City visit Fratton Park this weekend.
Pompey then make the challenging travel to Watford on Boxing Day.
