Cincinnati (AP) — On Friday, the Cincinnati Reds traded with the New York Yankees for veteran catcher Jose Trevino.
Trevino, who is better known for his defensive abilities, batted.215 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 74 games for the AL East champions this season. He was a backup by the end of the season, as youngster Austin Wells took over behind the plate.
Cincinnati shipped reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson to New York.
Cruz finished 3-8 with a 4.86 ERA in 69 outings this season, striking out 109 over 66 2/3 innings. Jackson, who turns 29 on Wednesday, hit.122 with three home runs in 58 games for Tampa Bay this season. He inked a minor-league contract with Cincinnati last month.
The Reds also have Tyler Stephenson at catcher. Stephenson, 28, is coming off a breakout season in terms of batting.258 with 19 home runs and 66 RBI.
Trevino, 32, made his major league debut for Texas in 2018. In 2022, he was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner for New York, hitting.248 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs in 115 games.
