Tony Cottee, a former West Ham United striker, has asked the board to fire Julen Lopetegui immediately and replace him with Graham Potter, the former Chelsea manager.
Lopetegui appears to be under increased pressure following a 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Sunday. The Hammers’ season has been poor, with them currently sitting in the bottom part of the Premier League league.
It is not the first time this season that speculation of Lopetegui being under pressure has appeared, with a game against Wolves earlier this season regarded as pivotal in determining his future. West Ham won the game, but their performance against Liverpool has raised further concerns.
Former Hammer Cottee responded on social media, urging the board to bring in Potter and questioned why Lopetegui has yet to be fired…
“What’s the Board waiting for?” The 5-0 defeat at City and elimination from the Cup by Villa?!!! Give Graham Potter a chance to save the season and work throughout the January window. Yesterday was horrible, and something must change. “Our fans deserve so much more.” Potter, described as a ‘brilliant’ manager, has been out of work since his dismissal by Chelsea. Potter appears to be waiting patiently for his next move, and it will be intriguing to see if he wants to take over at the London Stadium.
According to reports, Lopetegui has been handed two matches to turn things around, with the Hammers next facing Manchester City and Aston Villa. Although West Ham’s Premier League status isn’t dire, with the club comfortably above the relegation zone, the board may have expected a little more from the Spanish manager after paying lavishly in the summer transfer window.
Potter’s expertise at Chelsea might make him an interesting addition to West Ham. The 49-year-old performed admirably at Brighton before heading to Stamford Bridge, but it’s reasonable to say he struggled under Todd Boehly.
