These are three excellent attributes that any quarterback would want to possess. Gunner Stockton, Georgia football’s quarterback, is one day away from making his first college start. And what better place to make your debut than in the Sugar Bowl during the College Football Playoffs versus an excellent team like Notre Dame.
There is a lot of uncertainty about Stockton because the only major snaps he has played in his career came in the second half of the SEC Championship game against Texas, but what Georgia fans saw in those 30 minutes was encouraging. However, the fact that Stockton has only played 30 minutes in his career raises concerns for Georgia.
But Georgia does not pursue quarterbacks who are not excellent players, so what distinguishes Stockton as a decent quarterback? During a press conference on Monday, Kirby Smart discussed three characteristics that he believes make Stockton an exceptional quarterback.
“The No. 1 thing a quarterback has to have is decision-making skill,” Smart told 247sports. “He makes very smart decisions. The second most important trait for a quarterback is accuracy. Not necessarily arm skill, but rather accuracy. He has accuracy. Decision-making is a skill. Accuracy is an enormous skill. Athletic ability and talent will most likely take third place. He possesses those characteristics. He has all of the intangibles, such as toughness and character.”
Kirby Smart obviously has a lot of faith in Gunner Stockton.
Is there a better collection of attributes that a quarterback might possess? Strong decision-making, accuracy, talent, and athleticism are three qualities that every quarterback in football history aims for.
It’s excellent that Smart recognizes these characteristics in Stockton, but he still needs to demonstrate them on the field. Sure, he did that against Texas about a month ago, but only for a short period of time. Stockton needs to show himself on the field for a longer period of time before anyone can make an informed decision regarding his abilities.
In just over a day, we’ll find out if these attributes apply to Stockton. Whether it’s the biggest stage of his life or not, if Smart believes in him, Georgia fans should as well.
