Texas football will have a rare midweek matchup.
UT advanced to the College Football Playoff and will face Arizona State on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, in the Peach Bowl.
The Longhorns defeated the Clemson Tigers 38-24 in Austin for the first round matchup. Despite Clemson grabbing an early lead and trimming a 14-point deficit late, Texas’ defense thwarted any Tigers comeback, while the offense continued to run.
Texas sustained a few injuries throughout the contest. However, head coach Steve Sarkisian predicted a positive outcome for center Jake Majors and running back Quintrevion Wisner.
Arizona State defeated Iowa State 45-19 in the Big 12 title game and will return to action in Atlanta after three weeks of respite. Jordyn Tyson, the Sun Devils’ leading receiver, will miss the rest of the season due to a leg injury.

Texas had over two weeks to prepare for a game it hadn’t played in nearly 20 years.

In 2007, Arizona State was rated.
The Sun Devils were ranked No. 12, but the Texas Longhorns, ranked No. 17, crushed them 52-34. The Longhorns were led by quarterback Colt McCoy. He tossed 174 yards and carried 84 yards on 16 carries, while running back Jamaal Charles gained 161 yards on 27 carries and scored twice.
Texas put up 21 points in the first quarter alone. Arizona State attempted to respond, but five turnovers held the Sun Devils back. Texas cornerback Brandon Foster had two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a tipped pass. Rudy Carpenter, ASU’s quarterback, was sacked four times, threw two interceptions, and left in the fourth quarter after going 18-of-32. His replacement quarterback, Danny Sullivan, also threw an interception.
