The Cleveland Guardians were allegedly among the teams interested in Gleyber Torres. The Cleveland Guardians have already made a number of intriguing changes this offseason, and it looks that the front office has been equally busier behind the scenes.
Gleybor Torres recently signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland’s division foe. However, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Guardians were also interested in signing him before he committed to the contract.
Of course, this never came to pass. However, Torres in a Guardians suit would have been interesting for a variety of reasons. Torres would have replaced Andres Gimenez at second base after Cleveland traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays earlier in December.
Torres and Gimenez could not be more different as players. Gimenez is one of the game’s top defenders, but he has struggled at the plate in the last two seasons. Torres, on the other hand, has an above-average bat but is one of the worst defensive players in the game.
Furthermore, this source indicates that the front management is still interested in signing a seasoned or experienced second baseman for 2025.
Given the New York Yankees and Cleveland’s recent playoff histories, a transaction between the Guardians and the veteran baseman would have been intriguing.
The Yankees have defeated the Guardians in three consecutive postseason outings. Torres has been at the core of those New York lineups, having performed effectively versus Cleveland during his seven-season career.
It is unclear how serious the Guardians were about signing Torres. However, if they were really high on the 28-year-old, they will be reminded of their missed opportunity in 2025, when the Tigers play in the same division.
