According to an interview published last Sunday in GQ, Chicago Blackhawks legend Jonathan Toews is on the verge of making a comeback in the NHL.
After taking a break from hockey to focus on his health, the three-time Stanley Cup champion has started skating and stated a desire to play in the NHL.
“There’s a part of me that really doesn’t feel like my career is over yet,” Toews told ESPN. “I think there’s a big part of me that really wants to give it my all, to get back on the ice and see where it takes me.”
Elliotte Friedman, an NHL insider, revealed the veteran forward’s decision-making process during an appearance on Sportsnet’s “Saturday Headlines” program this weekend. “The bigger question that he’s going to go through now is, does it make more sense for him to play this year or wait until the summer, train hard, get into the best possible condition, and pick a team in the offseason when everybody has space and cap room?” Friedman wondered. To be eligible for this season’s playoffs, Toews must join a team by March 7.
However, waiting until the winter may offer him more time to train and provide teams more financial flexibility in signing him.
“There are no guarantees in life, but I’m going to give it my best.”
Shot,” Toews told GQ before being connected to several teams in recent days, including the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toews retired in April 2023, concluding a 14-year career with the Blackhawks. Chronic immune response syndrome and a protracted COVID kept him sidelined for extended periods of time, but he’s ready to return after a “healing journey” that included a visit in India, according to TSN.
Toews remains one of hockey’s top players, with 372 goals and 883 points in 1,067 NHL games, and he may be valuable for competing teams looking to acquire a veteran in time for the playoffs. Toews has three Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Chicago Blackhawks history.
