The Commanders need more wide receivers. Although the Washington Commanders’ primary focus right now is their impending playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, general manager Adam Peters and his staff will be thinking a little farther ahead.
The 2025 recruitment cycle is quickly approaching. Washington has an excellent opportunity to acquire the elements need to enter the Super Bowl discussion. Peters has a strategy in place, but it’s impossible to argue that this project isn’t significantly ahead of schedule.
They are far from finished. The Commanders have some obvious gaps to fill and need to increase depth across the board. Things have gone far better than expected in 2024. This gives Peters the platform he needs.
Be aggressive while keeping the overall picture in mind. Washington has approximately $100 million in salary-cap space and will be an attractive destination for veteran free agents. The Commanders also have seven picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to locate immediate impact players or potential gems in the rough.
Commanders pick WR Emeka Egbuka in ESPN’s NFL mock draft.
There is a need to strengthen rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ passing options. Peters might approach this in numerous ways. In his most recent mock draft, ESPN’s Jordan Reid feels Ohio State pass-catcher Emeka Egbuka could be worth picking in the late first round. “While defense is a feasible option for the Commanders, adding another pass-catcher to Jayden Daniels’ roster makes sense. [Emeka] Egbuka overcame an injury-riddled 2023 to record 70 receptions for 896 yards and 10 touchdowns. Egbuka, who stands 6-1 and weighs 205 pounds, is one of the most pro-ready players in this class thanks to his intelligent route running and strong hands. He is a high-end WR2 and an excellent complement to Terry McLaurin.”

Egbuka enters the NFL after three seasons of decent production with the Buckeyes. He’s explosive, creates separation effortlessly, and has the potential to add yards after the catch. These characteristics tend to translate incredibly effectively from college to the professionals.
The wideout’s route-running is improving well. Egbuka’s breaks at the top of his route stems may easily manipulate opposing cornerbacks. He knows how to find space against the zone and has the strength and hand technique to beat press coverage, which adds to the intrigue.
Peters will look into Egbuka’s chances in greater detail. Hundreds of others will be considered before a shortlist is created. However, given how well he is projected to do during the evaluation process, he could score significantly higher when everything is said and done.
The Commanders will prepare for every scenario. Peters received excellent early returns from his first draft class. If he can perform the same thing again, that will make a big difference.
Washington requires more production from Pro Bowl pass-catcher Terry McLaurin. Daniels is a superstar, so there’s no telling what the signal-caller can do once the supporting cast improves.
And make no mistake: the Commanders could do much worse than Egbuka.
