BREAKING NEWS : Reds Make Announcement on Former Sonny Gray Trade Piece

On March 13, 2022, the Cincinnati Reds traded Sonny Gray and pitching prospect Francis Peguero to the Minnesota Twins for highly-touted prospect Chase Petty. Despite coming off a 2021 season that saw him pitch to a 4.19 ERA with Cincinnati, he was still a very serviceable veteran pitcher with a solid floor and ceiling. Gray gave the Twins two great seasons, pitching to a 3.08 and 2.79 ERA (both best on the team) and consistently turned heads and polarized scouts with his projections. CBS Sports ranked him as the 37th best prospect in the 2021 class, writing, “Some envision him going in the crown-end of the first round, while others believe those individuals should be removed from their positions (and, perhaps, polite society).” Early in his career, Petty’s hard-throwing, high-octane pitching

 approach raised concerns about the risk. Petty has been a top-ten prospect in the Reds organization since the Gray trade, peaking at No. 5 ahead of the 2024 season. He had a slight elbow ailment that hampered his 2023 season, but the Reds watched and reduced his exertion to avoid reinjury. Petty spent most of 2024 in Double-A, pitching to a 4.39 ERA over 26 appearances, but has thrown to a 3.00 ERA in seven Triple-A starts at the end of 2024 and the first month of current season This is only supposed to be a spot start for Petty, but it is a fantastic opportunity for the 22-year-old to show the squad what he is capable of.
