Danny Ward has had a terrible season, with the Huddersfield Town striker missing four months of the campaign through injury.
Danny Ward’s match-winning effort at Watford, according to Huddersfield Town head coach Andre Breitenreiter, was deserved after a “good performance during the training week”.
The 33-year-old was brought as a substitute shortly after the hour mark at Vicarage Road and scored twice in the final 20 minutes to secure his side’s 2-1 comeback triumph.
The attacker has endured a disappointing season thus far, with his strikes at the weekend bringing his total to three goals from 13 games this season. The attacker has missed over four months of the season due to an Achilles ailment and tendinitis.
Ward has been as a substitute in recent games against Sunderland and Hull City. And Breitenreiter was happy with the forward’s preparation for Saturday’s game, which he felt contributed to his great performance.
The German also lauded Tom Edwards for his role after coming off the bench, with the Stoke City loanee crossing for Ward’s goal in his Terriers debut after nearly four months.
“It’s very special; he (Ward) was ready to come in and was waiting for this opportunity,” the head coach told HTTV. “He trained hard this week, so it’s well-deserved. When you perform well throughout the training week, it usually carries over into the game on the weekend.
“He deserved to score two goals for us, and I’m very happy for him, because he was out for a long time.” “Tom Edwards, he didn’t play since October, and this is really great for these players, they did a really great job at the end, like all the other players, and a really great performance from the team.”
The Terriers were without Radinio Balker and Sorba Thomas for Saturday’s game at Vicarage Road, having both started against Hull City the previous week. Balker was unable to compete because to a quad injury, and Thomas was unable to participate owing to personal circumstances.
Breitenreiter, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of his complete squad and congratulated his players for taking advantage of their opportunity during the weekend.
“We are a team with high quality, and it never depends on one or two players, it depends on the whole team,” the head coach said. “This is what I prefer, and I shared it with the crew. “All the other guys took their chances.”
