When asked about Newcastle United’s summer transfer ambitions, Amanda Staveley was tight-lipped.
The Magpies’ summer business has come into clear focus in recent weeks, following a season of ups and downs. Without a doubt, head coach Eddie Howe will want to ensure that his side has enough depth to attack a campaign on at least three fronts, possibly four, depending on European qualifying.
Howe’s team has struggled at important moments this season due to a lack of choices as injuries have struck hard, with Newcastle competing in not only the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, but also making their Champions League return for the first time in two decades.
As a result, the squad requires some TLC, and Newcastle fans are anticipating a busy summer after a quiet January in which Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limited their buying capacity.
Staveley is in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia this week, where he spoke at the inaugural Bloomberg Power Players meeting. In a variety of issues, the Ripon-born businesswoman was asked about the approaching transfer and whether Newcastle will make any “big signings”.
She remained tight-lipped, stating, “I’m not sure; you’ll have to come back and see how we do in the next few months.” I’m not sure what we’ll do with transfers at the moment.”
But Staveley did say: “You have to make sensible decisions in terms of the transfer window, stay within your FFP constraints, and try to do things that innovate and push the envelope because that’s the only way we’re going to engage our fanbase and grow the club.”
“We’ve got an incredible coach. We have an amazing crew. Bringing Eddie [Howe] onboard and an executive team was critical. Everyone is very involved in the day-to-day operations of the club. It’s a highly competitive business in terms of players and laws, so you must be extremely focused.”
