Jamie Reuben, Newcastle United’s co-owner, confesses he was “disappointed” by the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea.
Eddie Howe’s team went behind in the sixth minute when Nicolas Jackson glanced Cole Palmer’s first effort beyond Martin Dubravka.
As half-time approached, United equalised through Alexander Isak’s looping finish. However, the Blues regained their lead just before the hour mark with Palmer’s drilled shot.
Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk made it 3-1 after bursting into the penalty box. Jacob Murphy, who replaced the injured Anthony Gordon in the first half, equalized for United with a magnificent strike, but Chelsea held on.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side slipped one point behind Newcastle in 10th place, with a game in hand, as the race for European qualification heats up, including Manchester United, West Ham, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Wolves.
And, proving his conclusion on X, formerly known as Twitter, Reuben wrote: “Disappointed with the outcome, but our fans were fantastic one again @NUFC. Thank you, and safe travels home.”
Newcastle are back on the road on Saturday, facing Manchester City for a place in the FA Cup semifinals. Around 8,000 Geordies will be in attendance at the Etihad Stadium, where the club hasn’t won in ten years.
