Arik Armstead got a new team in less than 24 hours after being released by his last team.
Armstead will join the Jacksonville Jaguars after signing a three-year deal worth up to $51 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The former Oregon Ducks star will head east just one day after being formally released by the San Francisco 49ers. Armstead refused to accept a pay cut and was let go by the 49ers.
Armstead’s exit ended a nine-year stint in San Francisco, but the agreement reunites him with general manager Trent Baalke. Baalke was the 49ers’ general manager when Armstead was selected with the team’s first-round choice (17th overall) in the 2015 NFL draft.
The Jaguars are determined to strengthen their defense, which ranked 17th in scores allowed and 22nd in yards allowed. Jacksonville (9-8) missed the playoffs after losing five of its final six games, thanks in part to a defense that struggled to stop opponents.
In 12 games in 2023, the 6-foot-7, 290-pound Armstead recorded 27 total tackles, five sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and four tackles for loss. Armstead had 11 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, and seven quarterback pressures in three postseason games. He played through a torn meniscus in his right knee for the whole three-game postseason.
Armstead stated that he wants to be ready to return sometime during training camp.
“We will see. “We’ll see how it goes,” Armstead told reporters.
Armstead has 33.5 career sacks, including a career-high 10 in 2019, across 128 games (regular season and playoffs). He also has 302 tackles (43 for loss), three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
