Andy Cole, a Manchester United star, says Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is ‘not currently’ the right guy for the post at Old Trafford.
McKenna, the Ipswich Town manager, has received praise for his performance at Portman Road. It has not gone ignored abroad, with former club Manchester United reportedly among his fans.
The Northern Irishman formerly worked in the Old Trafford academy before joining Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staffs.
McKenna departed the Red Devils in December 2021 to begin his first senior managerial post with the Tractor Boys. He brought Town back to the Championship in 2022/23 and now has them in the running for a stunning double promotion.
He currently has Ipswich Town sitting second in the Championship table, and as a result, the manager is projected for a career at the pinnacle of the game.
Andy Cole, a Manchester United legend, believes McKenna is ‘not currently’ fit for the big job. Cole told Betfred the following:
“With Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool, will they consider appointing Kieran? “Probably not.”Manchester United requires a seasoned manager who has worked at the highest level. Is Kieran McKenna the guy? He is not now.
“However, this is all speculation because he’s done well at Ipswich and has previously worked at Manchester United, so sometimes I believe it’s a case of journalists just trying to fill space in their newspapers.”
Heading for the top?
Many believe that Ipswich Town boss McKenna is a manager destined to lead a club in the Premier League, and perhaps even one towards the top of the league. Manchester United are by far the biggest side linked with his services though, and it perhaps feels a little early for that.
The link is a fairly easy one too, given his history at Old Trafford.
Nonetheless, it feels as though McKenna is someone destined to keep rising after his work with Ipswich Town. He could yet lead the Tractor Boys in the Premier League, which was previously unthinkable. The fact that has become a very real prospect is a credit to his remarkable work.
For Cole though, McKenna isn’t currently the man to lead a new chapter with Manchester United.
