BREAKING NEWS : Philadelphia Phillies announce starting pitchers for Wednesday’s doubleheader

Following the postponement of Tuesday night’s game, the Phillies named their starting pitchers for Wednesday’s doubleheader. The choices were hardly surprising.

Left-hander Jesús Luzardo will start the first game against the Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park, replacing the originally scheduled start on Tuesday. Righty Aaron Nola will start the second game for Philadelphia, as he was originally scheduled to pitch on Wednesday.

St. Louis has yet to declare their starters for the doubleheader. Sonny Gray was expected to pitch on Tuesday, and Erick Fedde was supposed to start on Wednesday before the rainout.

Following the Cardinals’ victory in the opener on Monday, the Phillies and Cardinals will play a split doubleheader to complete their three-game series.

The games are set at 1:05 and 6:15 p.m. Eastern. According to the Phillies, tickets for Tuesday’s game will be good for the second game on Wednesday, with all stadium gates opening at 5:15 p.m. Luzardo has thrived in his debut season with the Phillies following an offseason trade from the Marlins. He leads the National League in WAR (2.1) and has a 2.11 ERA in eight games, totaling 47 innings. The Phillies are 6-2 in games he’s started. Luzardo has perhaps been the finest pitcher in a Philadelphia staff loaded with high-level talent.

Nola will play despite a slow start to the season. The seasoned workhorse started the year with a terrible 0-5 record, then rebounded for two encouraging games before another flop this past Friday. Nola has a 4.89 ERA in eight starts, with a high strikeout rate but some home run issues. He’ll get the opportunity to demonstrate that he’s still on track, despite his last start on Wednesday.
