Pedro Neto’s father has responded to the news that the Wolves winger has been selected for Portugal’s Euro 2024 team.
Neto, 24, had excellent news on Tuesday when Roberto Martinez revealed his roster for the next competition in Germany. Neto’s Wolves teammates, Jose Sa and Nelson Semedo, have also been called up. Despite his strong season, defender Toti Gomes did not make the cut.
Ruben Neves, the former Wolves captain, was chosen, while Matheus Nunes was left out after struggling for regular minutes since leaving Molineux to join Manchester City.
It’s a terrific occasion for Neto, who lost out on Euro 2020 due to a damaged patella. He was unable to attend the 2022 World Cup in
Qatar because he had an ankle injury. The winger’s father and Wolves fans are both happy for him.

This will be an excellent opportunity for Neto to demonstrate his abilities on a huge stage. He was fantastic for Wolves in 2023/24, but was only able to make 24 appearances across all competitions owing to two hamstring injuries.
Neto’s second injury sidelined him for almost two months. With Euro 2024 taking place this summer, Neto’s condition was far from ideal, as he really wanted to reach the final roster.
The player’s father has responded to the news that his son has made it in, revealing that they both worried he would be overlooked because of his injury issues. He stated (via O Jogo): “We’ve already spoken…” Hope is always the last to die. Of course, we had some reservations, not least because he wasn’t quite physically fit at this point.
“Whenever this type of event came up, he was unlucky due to injury, but this time it went smoothly. He is a humble player who always gives it his all, and this call will undoubtedly keep him grounded.” A relief for Neto; he deserves his shot.
Neto was undoubtedly apprehensive that history might repeat itself in the run-up to Portugal’s Euro 2024 team announcement.
He is fully fit and clearly made his comeback against Liverpool in the last match. However, he missed two months and another two months early in the season.
Given Portugal’s plethora of excellent players, he could easily have missed out.
But, happily, Martinez believes in the Wolves player, and we’ll get to watch him play for his country this summer in Germany. He may not start games, but Martinez is likely to turn to him at some time.
Neto has earned his call-up. He was very unfortunate to miss the last two major events due to injury, so Kudos to Martinez for providing him the opportunity.
