DerbyshireLive’s latest Derby County news includes former Premier League defender and Barnsley summariser Adie Moses’ assessment on alleged Rams target Herbie Kane. Adie Moses believes Herbie Kane has the quality and capacity to return to the Championship after Derby County expressed interest in the former Liverpool midfielder.
Kane is a free agent after being released by the Tykes following their failure to earn promotion to the Championship, and the Rams and numerous other clubs have expressed interest in the 25-year-old, who scored nine goals and assisted five others last season.
Former Premier League defender Moses, who played in the top division with the Tykes, has been watching Barnsley this season as a summariser. And he believes Kane is ready to play in the Championship again after stints with Hull and Barnsley in the second division. “I quite like him for what it is worth,” he told Derbyshire Live in an exclusive interview. “A few Barnsley fans questioned his motivation, knowing that he was out of contract at the end of the season.

Barnsley’s three midfielders this season take some beating on their day. You had Luca Connell, Kane, and Adam Phillips. Connell was a lovely ball player, Kane was very comfortable, and Phillips scored goals. Together, they were three of League One’s best midfielders.

The one concern Derby may have about Kane is whether he is athletic enough for what they want as they prepare to return to the second tier. With Conor Hourihane, Korey Smith, and Max Bird leaving the club this summer, Derby head coach Paul Warne has a blank canvas on which to build a new midfield.
Warne wants to construct a midfield with energy, creativity, and tenacity, but Moses believes Kane is more analytical in his approach. “No, he’s not athletic,” he replied. “He is not a box-to-box Steven Gerrard; rather, he is a neat and tidy footballer who can move up the pitch. He isn’t scared to shoot if he’s in range, but he’s not dynamic or a speedster; he’s more of a soothing effect, saying, “Give me it here and I’ll make some space.” His ball skills are more impressive than his dynamism.”
