According to X reporter Pete O’Rourke, Rotherham United is close to signing Burton Albion midfielder Joe Powell.
Rotherham United hope to continue their ambitious early summer recruitment push by luring the Londoner to South Yorkshire this summer. The Millers are prepared for life again in League One after being relegated from the Championship.
Powell, 25, has been at Burton Albion since 2021. However, his contract expires at the end of next month, and despite being offered new terms by the Brewers, he is set to become a free agent as things stand.
According to the most recent update on his condition by writer O’Rourke on X, Steve Evans is willing to entice him to the New York Stadium in order to strengthen his midfield department. He intends to promote them from the third tier at the first opportunity.
Rotherham United is interested in adding competition and depth to its midfield department by pursuing Powell, one of 20 potential candidates.
The Millers have had a busy week in terms of transfers, having already signed forward Jonson Clarke-Harris, defender Joe Rafferty, and full-back Reece James from Peterborough United, Portsmouth, and Sheffield Wednesday, respectively.
Powell might be the next through the door, having helped Burton Albion stay up this season under Martin Paterson.
He progressed through West Ham’s academy system and played for the Premier League club at several youth levels.
The Canning Town native went on to make one appearance for the Hammers’ first team in an EFL Cup victory over Macclesfield Town at the London Stadium, which finished 8-0.
Powell had a loan spell in the Football League with Northampton Town to gain experience.

Burton Albion signed him in 2020, and he has not looked back since.
He has established himself as a crucial player at the Pirelli Stadium, appearing in 186 games across all competitions and scoring 26 goals, five of which came last season.
However, his time with the Brewers appears to be coming to an end, with Rotherham United ready to pounce.
The Millers finished last in the Championship this season, but they aren’t feeling sorry for themselves as they continue to improve their roster.
