ROTHERHAM United brushed off stiff competition from two other third-tier clubs to sign Shaun McWilliams.
The feisty midfielder left his hometown club Northampton Town after eleven years to join AESSEAL New York Stadium this week, and he has choices.
Millers manager Steve Evans stated: “I must admit I met the lad a couple of times and we spoke long and hard.”I believe there were two other clubs in League One presently – one that was relegated last season and one that was promoted – and both sought to sign him. “We presented our case and it was a lovely phone call from Shaun saying he’d love to join us, considering the interest in the boy.” McWilliams’ progress has been hampered in recent years by a number of injuries, but he still appeared 39 times last season as Northampton ended mid-table in League One. “He’s box to box, side to side,” Evans explained. “He’s reasonably good technically and he’s got a spirit and endeavour and a willingness to run hard.”We played against Northampton Town during my time at Stevenage, and every time Shaun McWilliams appeared, if he wasn’t named Man of the Match, he was very close.”
McWilliams turned rejected a new contract at Sixfields in favour of a two-year deal up north.
He stated, “Rotherham is a massive club.” I’ve known the gaffer for a few years, and he’s expressed interest in me.
“I met him, and he reiterated how he sees me as a player and how he sees me playing, which sold it to me right away. This club wants to get promoted right now, and I want to be a part of it.
“Usually you’re in your prime between the ages of 25 and 29, and I’m just getting there,” McWilliams added. “I am an athletic central midfielder.
“I want to chip in with a couple of goals and some assists but mainly the aim is to make sure that central midfield is mine and get the team on the front foot.”
