Nets owner discusses direction of franchise

Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai intimated in fresh statements that the franchise might be leaning toward something approximating a full-scale rebuild.

Speaking at the J.P. Morgan Global China Summit in Shanghai on Friday, Tsai stated he intended to develop a long-term winning culture within the Nets organization. The owner also appeared to be prepared and willing to put up with some difficult years in the short term to make it happen.

“I want to create a winning mentality and culture that is sustainable. These are two completely different things. If you only want to win today, you could wreck your future by dealing away all of your assets, but I believe what I want to do with the Brooklyn Nets is take a

“The Brooklyn Nets are at a crossroads, in a sense. I believe we did not do as well as we expected last season. “We didn’t make the playoffs,” Tsai explained. “But we intend to rebuild the team and ensure that we can compete in the long term. I believe there is a distinction when people question owners, ‘What do you want to do with a basketball team?’ There is a distinction between ‘I want to win’ and ‘I want to create a winning mindset and culture that is sustainable.’ These are two completely different things.

“If you want to win now, you risk ruining your future by selling off all of your assets.” I believe what I want to do with the Brooklyn Nets is to take a longer

One may argue that the Nets had already ruined their future by dealing away assets. The Kevin Durant-led superteam failed to win an NBA championship and disbanded spectacularly a little more than a year ago. The Nets did acquire Mikal Bridges back as part of the Durant trade, but beyond that, they do not really have many long-term assets they can count on.

For now, the Nets are staying with their current organizational leadership. However, it appears that they will be directing a rebuild rather than attempting to make the playoffs, at least for now.
