“His too old ” :Rotherham United in race to sign another 34-year-old midfielder

ROTHERHAM United are looking to add Liam Kelly, an accomplished midfielder, as their seventh summer signing.
According to The Advertiser, the Millers are competing with three other clubs to recruit the 34-year-old Coventry City player. A decision is expected before the end of the week.

Kelly has made 180 appearances for Coventry since joining the club seven years ago. He captained the Sky Blues to promotion from League Two in 2018 and League One in 2020.

Kelly, a creative playmaker, began his career with Kilmarnock in Scotland before moving on to Bristol City, Oldham, and Leyton Orient before being signed by ex-Rotherham manager Mark Robins and became one of his main men at Coventry.

Kelly, who is out of contract this summer, played 19 games last season and has been in talks with the club about a new contract. He will now complete his career elsewhere after his release, with Rotherham among the options. It is reported that two more strong League One clubs are also interested in him. Millers boss Steve Evans is already working to replace the vacancies created by the departure of 17 players following the club’s relegation from the Championship last season.

Striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, midfielder Shaun McWilliams, left-back Reece James, and experienced defenders Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett, who both won League One with Portsmouth last season, had already signed on before Burton Albion midfielder Joe Powell joined yesterday, bringing the total number of new signings to six.

Evans stated, “I have to credit the chairman and the board. When I got the opportunity to return, it was never about my own terms. It was a question of whether the chairman and the board would deliver, which he always did.

“He has always stood up and told me to go and build a squad and I feed back into the chairman and the board on a daily basis.”

Evans added, “We’ve done some really nice work so far, but we still have some fine-tuning to do.

“It’s like we got a grand piano, and it looks great sitting in the far corner, but you need to fine tune it.

“We’ll get into fine tuning territory after the weekend when we start really breaking down our squad.”
