Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris has questioned the Premier League’s financial rules, arguing that they benefit the existing elite. Earlier this month, it was disclosed that Villa was considering selling players before June 30 to avoid violating Profit & Sustainability Rules.
Sawiris has blasted English football’s spending regulations, claiming that the existing laws have transformed the sport into a “financial game”. The Financial Times reports that Sawiris is seeking legal advice on whether to file a formal complaint against the Premier League’s PSR regulations.
“Some of the rules have actually resulted in cementing the status quo more than creating upward mobility and fluidity in the sport,” he remarked in an interview with the Financial Times.
“The rules are incomprehensible and detrimental to football. Managing a sports team has become more akin to being a treasurer or a bean counter than looking at what your squad requires.
“It’s more about making paper profits than actual profits. “It becomes a financial game rather than a sporting game.”
