What Kieran McKenna had to say after his first Carabao Cup victory over a Premier League club. Dean Henderson, a former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, was forced off with an injury in his Crystal Palace debut.
Last season, he was on loan at the City Ground and appeared in 18 Premier League games before suffering an injury that ended his season early. He was replaced by fellow loanee Keylor Navas, although Forest wanted to re-sign Henderson this summer.
Forest were thought to prefer a loan with an option to buy over a permanent transfer, maybe due to Henderson’s previous injury record. United and Forest both stuck to their respective positions, therefore a move never happened.
Henderson instead joined Palace this summer and made his debut in the Carabao Cup against his previous side Manchester United on Tuesday evening. He was forced to leave the game less than 20 minutes in due to a groin injury.
On social media, Forest fans have been responding to Henderson’s injury. “Awful bad luck for Dean Henderson, but 100% vindicates the #NFFC’s decision not to buy him,” one remarked. All the Manchester United fans who were complaining about us not going ahead with the transaction may now stop.”
“There were rumors Forest wouldn’t buy Hendo because he couldn’t kick a football with his injury,” another added. That’s why the loan deal was presented, as well as why we needed a large number of games under the buy clause. Right decision, smug face tomorrow for everyone who made it.”
