Swansea City head coach Luke Williams claims the 26-year-old winger could sign a new contract this summer.

Despite the 26-year-old’s release last month, Swansea City head coach Luke Williams believes winger Przemyslaw Placheta could sign a new contract this summer.

The Poland international joined the Swans on a free transfer from Norwich City in January, but the club confirmed in May that he would leave South Wales at the end of his short-term deal.

Placheta is now receiving rehabilitation at Swansea’s training complex after suffering a major hamstring injury in March. However, manager Williams thinks a new deal could still be in the works [quotes via BBC]:

“We’re still in communication with Przemy, and we still have a duty of care. He sustained an injury while playing for us, and we have to look after him right now.

“To honor that,” the 43-year-old stated. “I don’t believe the door is totally closed on Przemy. I believe he played some excellent football for us and helped to revamp the team a little bit.”

Placheta made 10 appearances on the Welsh coast before his injury, forming a dynamic wing partnership with Brazilian Ronald as Swansea improved their form to avoid relegation to the third tier, eventually finishing 14th after a difficult start to the season that saw former manager Michael Duff dismissed. Placheta has expressed his desire to continue with Swansea City, declaring in February that he would be interested in signing a long-term contract with the Championship team.

The former Norwich City player, who also had a loan spell at Birmingham City, has struggled to find game time in England, making only 76 appearances in four seasons and scoring three goals, despite being afflicted by injuries more recently.

The winger presently has seven caps for Poland’s senior team, the last of which came in 2021. Placheta may consider a longer stay in South Wales as the route to returning to the international squad, where he faces heavy competition from former Hull City and West Bromwich Albion wideman Kamil Grosicki.

Writer’s perspective
A new deal for Placheta appears to be a sensible move.
