Charlton Athletic has signed a former Luton Town midfielder for the League One club.
Charlton Athletic has signed former Luton Town midfielder Luke Berry, despite reports that QPR and Watford were also interested in signing him.
Last season, the 31-year-old made 17 Premier League games for the Hatters, who were relegated. Berry made 184 appearances for Luton Town between 2017 and 2024.
The player previously played for Cambridge United and Barnsley. He has been promoted from all three EFL divisions and scored in each of England’s top five leagues, providing a wealth of experience to Nathan Jones’ Addicks team as the club continues to conduct early-season transfers. Berry signed a two-year contract as a free agent after being released from Kenilworth Road, becoming the League One club’s second summer signing after goalkeeper Will Mannion. Football Insider reported last month that both London rivals QPR and Watford were interested in the midfielder.
Berry stated after signing for Charlton Athletic on Monday: “Nathan [Jones] informed me how amazing the club is. When I finished at Luton, I called him right immediately because I wanted to get things starting. This Charlton team is quite good. We simply need to believe in ourselves and put in the effort, and I believe we can accomplish great things.”
After becoming entangled in a League One relegation battle midway through the season, Charlton Athletic were reborn under former Southampton and Luton Town manager Nathan Jones. The Addicks completed a remarkable 14-game unbeaten streak and are expected to compete at the opposite end of the division next season.
Berry worked with Jones at Luton Town on both of the manager’s tenure there. Jones informed the official Charlton website: “Luke is someone I signed for Luton in 2017.” He is one of the top goalscoring midfielders outside of the Premier League in recent years, and we are thrilled to have him.
“I know him well as a character, athlete, and footballer. Given his track record of promotions, this is a huge signing for us.
He has obviously had three promotions with Luton, and that is exactly why we brought him in. We had to fight off a lot of competition to obtain him, and I’m simply glad that our club and my relationship with him allowed us to complete the signing. I’m confident he’ll be a huge addition to the team.
“His previous game was in the Premier League, and his next appearance will be for Charlton Athletic, so that is the type of player we want to acquire. We’ve turned down a lot of Championship interest for Luke.”
