Charlton Athletic have announced the permanent signing of Millwall defender Alex Mitchell for an undisclosed amount.
The 22-year-old was a vital member of Lincoln City’s second-best Sky Bet League One defence last season.
Mitchell has signed a three-year contract with the Addicks, becoming Nathan Jones’ fourth signing this summer after Will Mannion, Luke Berry, and Josh Edwards.
He said, “I’m extremely glad to finish it early. When I found out Charlton was interested, it was a no-brainer for me. It’s a large nightclub.
“I played against Charlton last season, and my last visit to The Valley left me in awe of the stadium. I thought the fanbase was excellent!
So I am really looking forward to it.”My conversations with Nathan [Jones] have been really nice. “He made it plain that he wanted me to feel valued, which was a huge part of why I came here. I can’t wait to work with him. Nathan Jones said: “Alex is someone I’ve known for a while, so I’m delighted to welcome him to Charlton.
“He’s gone out on loan and played games, which is vital for a young player. He is a terrific defender who will make our team stronger, more competitive, and more aggressive.
“He has so much room to grow. He is 22 years old, has played a lot of games, and is still far from reaching his potential. He performed admirably in Lincoln last season, contributing significantly to the team’s strong second half. He’s a player I’m incredibly pleased to collaborate with.”
Andy Scott, Charlton’s technical director, said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring Alex to the club. He had a fantastic season at Lincoln City last year, demonstrating genuine promise in a team that proved difficult to beat and play against.
“We believe he has the potential to develop into a premier defender at this level and higher. He has tremendous speed and strength. He is combative and a leader, but he also reads the game well and has strong ball skills. “In Nathan, we have a manager that will work with players and help them progress to the next level. We am glad Alex opted to join us because he was in high demand, and I am excited to see how he progresses with us.”
