Rotherham United transfer news: Experienced Steve Evans favourite is signing number nine

Steve Evans has signed winger Alex MacDonald for the third time, making him Rotherham United’s ninth acquisition of the busy transfer window.
The Warrington-born 34-year-old has previously played for Evans at Gillingham and Stevenage, where his contract expires at the end of this month.

Following their relegation to League One and the signing of manager Evans for a second term, the Millers’ team has been completely overhauled. MacDonald has played Europa League games on loan for Falkirk from his first club Burnley and has represented England and Scotland at the youth level.

He also has coaching experience, having worked alongside caretaker manager Steve Lovell when Evans was fired by Gillingham in January 2022. Evans returned to Stevenage in March and signed MacDonald in the next transfer window. He has previously played for Burton Albion, Oxford United, and Mansfield Town, and in 2012, he had two loan spells with Plymouth Argyle while with Burnley.

MacDonald joins Evans on a free transfer, along with Jonson Clarke-Harris, Joe Powell, Joe Rafferty, Liam Kelly, Sean Raggett, Reece James, Zak Jules, and Shaun McWilliams.
