Huddersfield Town have already turned down a big offer for Charlton Athletic striker Alfie May this summer. Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones insists the club is “not under any pressure to sell to another rival” amid speculation linking last season’s League One top goal-scorer Alfie May with a move to Huddersfield Town.
The South London Press claimed earlier this month that the Addicks rejected a proposal from the Terriers for the striker, and have subsequently indicated that Town “have resumed their attempts to strike a May scored 27 goals in 50 games in all competitions for Charlton last season after joining from Cheltenham Town last summer, where he scored 48 goals in the previous two years.
The forward was signed by the Robins in January 2020 while Michael Duff was in control, and the two worked together for two and a half seasons before the now-Terriers manager left to join Barnsley.
With the Terriers rumored to be interested in May, Jones has reiterated that the Addicks do not need to trade the striker, and the manager has promised to operate in the “best interests” of his club. “It’s a tricky situation with Alfie. “He is our player, and we adore Alfie here; he is a fan favourite who scores goals for us,” Jones told the South London Press. “I don’t want this to be only about Alfie. When making choices about any player, we must consider what is best for the club. If keeping Alfie is the best option for this football club, that is what will happen. If Alfie May leaves this football club, we must have players who will improve the squad greatly.
“I’m not under any financial or other pressure from the board or the club to do anything.
“That is why I came here: to have the freedom to make great decisions for the football club, to be bold, and to truly ask the board to support that. And they have, at every level. We’re not under any pressure. In this regard, we are a large football club.
“For what has been rumoured around Alfie, we’re not under any pressure to sell to another rival.”
