The 49ers have not committed to Purdy just yet. The 49ers have not made a long-term commitment to Brock Purdy yet.
He has one more season before he becomes eligible for a contract extension. If he wins the Super Bowl, the 49ers will undoubtedly offer him a big contract. But what happens if he fails to win the Super Bowl for the third time in a row? What would the 49ers do then?
Head coach Kyle Shanahan clearly appreciates Brock Purdy and believes he is a talented quarterback. But does Shanahan believe Purdy is good enough to win the Super Bowl? Does Shanahan believe he is elite? If not, will Shanahan trade Purdy for a top quarterback next season?
I’m guessing Shanahan holds Purdy somewhat accountable for the 49ers’ most recent Super Bowl loss. Because Shanahan would never blame himself. Purdy was solid against the Chiefs, but not amazing. And if the 49ers can’t win a Super Bowl while Purdy is making roughly $1 million per season, how will they win one if he’s making roughly $60 million per season? They ultimately could decide that he was the best quarterback for them while he’s on a rookie deal, but at a higher price point they’d be better off with someone else.
They could deal Purdy to the Cowboys for Dak Prescott. Alternatively, they might deal Purdy to the Falcons for Kirk Cousins. We know Cousins and Shanahan are very close friends and would probably desire to work together one more time before retiring.
