Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has claimed that the club hopes to sign Zak Swanson to a new contract ‘within the next week or two’.
After winning League One, Portsmouth made numerous contract moves that sparked controversy.
Many were startled by the decision not to exercise right-back Swanson’s 12-month extension option. He has struggled with injuries since signing from Arsenal in the summer of 2022, but when healthy, the 23-year-old has proven to be a reliable backline option. Swanson’s contract had expired, and it seemed increasingly probable that he would not be wearing Pompey colours again. However, manager John Mousinho’s most recent report shows that may not be the case.
According to The News, the Portsmouth manager claimed that negotiations with the Cambridge-born defender are still ‘ongoing’, but the Championship new boys are ‘hopeful’ of reaching an agreement soon.
“The situation with Zak is that contract negotiations are ongoing,” he stated.
“We’re hopeful we can agree something with Zak over the next week or so.”
A smart move.
Portsmouth had already signed a few new players, but with Swanson’s contract expiring, it seems that another right-back would be on the shopping list. Jordan Williams came when his Barnsley contract expired and appears to be the first choice. He needs cover and competition, but with the club focused on avoiding paying a reasonable fee on someone
Who could just be a backup? Their options appeared to be rather limited. Swanson is the ideal candidate for that position. It will not cost anything to get him back, and he is an excellent option on the right side, both for the near and long term futures.
Swanson, who is only 23, still has lots of time to flourish and reach his full potential. Many people will support him to do so if he can stay fit with Pompey. The following area of focus
Returning to the transfer market, Portsmouth should look to sign a new midfielder or two in the near future.
Jordan Archer has bolstered the alternatives in goal, while the previously mentioned Williams is a defender who can fill in at center-back.
Alongside his natural right-back position. Sam Silvera and Josh Murphy have also joined on the wings. Reuben Swann has come from AFC Sudbury, but he appears to be a long-term fixture in the middle of the park.
As a result, it would not be surprising if Marlon Pack’s defensive partner was targeted. Owen Moxon will be hoping to take the starting slot, but even then, depth will be required, with Tom Lowery, Terry Devlin, and Ben Stevenson as potential choices.
