Birmingham City are close to signing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Marc Leonard, according to The Mirror (live transfer blog, 01.07.24, 18:46).
Birmingham City are expected to pay £450,000 to recruit the Scotsman. He has spent the last two years on loan with Northampton Town, gaining valuable experience. Leonard, 22, has returned to Brighton following his last stay at Sixfields. He still has a year left on his contract at AMEX Stadium, but the Seagulls have chosen to cash in this summer and let him leave permanently.
In the most recent update on his condition, The Mirror reports that the Blues are getting closer to wooing him to the Midlands. They are preparing for life in League One after being relegated from the Championship, along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town, and are looking for new additions under new manager Chris Davies. Birmingham City may consider signing Leonard to increase competitiveness and depth in their squad.
He has a promising future ahead of him and would make an excellent long-term addition.
The former Scotland youth international began his career with Rangers and Hearts before moving to Brighton in 2018. He’s been with the Premier League club for six years and has made two appearances for the main squad.
Leonard joined Northampton Town for the first time in 2022 and helped the club win promotion from League Two in his first season.
He rejoined the Cobblers 12 months ago and has settled in well in the third tier.
The Glasgow native appeared in 97 games across all competitions for Jon Brady’s team, scoring six times.
What’s next?
Birmingham City will be trying to finalize a deal as soon as possible as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Their goal is to earn immediate promotion, and they have now returned to preseason.
