SHOCKING NEWS : Steelers LB Cole Holcomb In Danger Of Missing 2024 Season : Report

Cole Holcomb proven to be a solid player after the Steelers restructured their linebacking corps last winter. The sixth-year veteran started every game for Pittsburgh until his debut season ended abruptly.

Holcomb had a significant knee injury in November, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. Last month, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reported that the 27-year-old was set to start the season on the reserve/PUP list. That designation would necessitate at least a four-week absence to open the season, but the newest news on his condition is not promising.

Kaboly believes that any contributions from Holcomb to the Steelers in 2024 “would be a bonus” (subscription needed). This leaves open the possibility.

If the former fifth-round pick misses the majority of the season, it will have a significant impact on Pittsburgh’s second-tier defense. Holcomb received a three-year, $18 million contract last spring and thus faced high expectations upon arriving. Prior to his injury, the former Commander recorded 54 tackles and two forced turnovers in eight games with his new team.

Of course, the Steelers have focused more on the linebacker position in recent months. Pittsburgh added Patrick Queen in free agency to add a new face to the starting lineup. The team also selected Payton Wilson in the third round of the draft. The NC State alum enters the league with injury concerns but a great potential considering his college.

production. In addition to those two, Pittsburgh’s LBs include Elandon Roberts and Mark Robinson. The former was also a 2023 free agent signing, and he had a strong workload in his Steelers rookie season. Roberts had 101 tackles and 2.5 sacks, and if Holcomb is out for an extended period of time, he might return to the starting lineup with Queen. Robinson largely played on special teams last year, and additional injuries on the depth chart are likely required for him to take on significant defensive responsibilities.

Once training camp begins, the Steelers will decide whether to place Holcomb on the active/PUP list. Players can be activated from there at any time, although it appears that Any type at the start of the 2024 campaign (and possibly much beyond that point) should not be anticipated.
