According to Football Insider, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen will miss the start of the new season due to an injury.
The 21-year-old shot-stopper had a brilliant Euro 2024 campaign, starting every single game for the Netherlands, but is set to miss six weeks with an unspecified ailment. Verbruggen will miss Brighton’s Premier League opener at Everton on August 17th, as well as their first home game against Manchester United.
Following the cruciate ligament injury to fellow Dutch goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, Brighton and new manager Fabian Hurzeler may have to rely on Englishman Jason Steele to start the season.
Brighton is weak in goalkeepers following Verbruggen’s injury.
Since the departure of Robert Sanchez to Chelsea for £25 million last summer, Verbruggen has been Brighton’s go-to goalkeeper.
Under Roberto de Zerbi, the number one position was heavily swapped between Verbruggen and Steele, but now that the Italian coach has left, he is expected to become the first choice. Verbruggen made 27 appearances for Brighton in all competitions last season, his first since arriving from Belgian club Anderlecht in July 2023. He has now become Ronald Koeman’s starting goalkeeper for Holland, helping the team reach the semi-finals before being eliminated by England.
