Each new season brings both good and terrible news. The Rams have a lot of good news this season, and we have only scratched the surface with five exciting events in training camp thus far. But you have to take the good with the bad, and the Rams’ secondary has been hammered early on due to an epidemic of injuries.
After losing DB Derion Kendrick to an ACL injury that has shut down his 2024 NFL season, the team suffered another major setback on Day 2 of training camp, when projected starting cornerback Darious Williams pulled up limping on the last play of the day.
Reports after the fact appeared to point to Williams hurting his hamstring.
While hamstring injuries are not unusual, the fact that a crucial player to this team’s secondary got injured so early was not a good sign. And once the effect of the news hit new DC Chris Shula, it became evident that this is a concerning development for the Rams’ new defensive coordinator.
But let’s pause, take a deep breath, and evaluate the big picture. While the Rams will undoubtedly have to handle Derion Kendrick’s absence this season, Kendrick was expected to be a rotational contender in the secondary. He was never expected to play a starting position this season (despite some inaccurate claims).
While the nature of Darious Williams’ ailment is unknown, assuming initial reports of a hamstring injury are correct, the team has plenty of time to allow DWill to fully recover and still suit up for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
Meanwhile, the Rams must continue training camp to ensure that the entire roster is prepared to handle the workload, whatever it is distributed.
