JUST IN : Brighton confirmed the departure of another 33-year-old key midfielder £5.9 million (€7 million)

Brighton are reluctantly preparing to let Pascal Gross join Borussia Dortmund after completing a deal for £5.9 million (€7 million) for the Germany midfielder. Gross, one of Brighton’s longest-serving players, came in 2017 when the club was promoted to the Premier League. He has less than a year on his contract and was given a new one.

Despite Brighton’s selection of his countrymen Fabian Hürzeler to replace Roberto De Zerbi as manager, Gross is thought to have been eager to return to Germany, where he received his first senior call-up last year and was part of the squad for Euro 2024.

The 33-year-old has also drawn interest from Eintracht Frankfurt in recent weeks, but he is believed to be close to joining Dortmund, who were defeated by Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League Final. They plan to pay an initial €7 million (£5.9 million), with bonuses potentially increasing the contract to £8 million. He has made 261 appearances for Brighton and was named the club’s player of the season in May.

“Pascal has been a fantastic servant to this club,” said Brighton CEO Paul Barber last week during the club’s pre-season tour of Japan. “From the day we established our account in the Premier League to last season, he was still scoring goals, assisting goals, getting into the German national squad, and getting

“We’d want to keep him. We’re also cognizant of where he is in his career and the chance that Dortmund may bring for him.” Brighton may also have competition to keep Billy Gilmour, with Napoli manager Antonio Conte reportedly interested in signing the Scotland midfielder. An £8 million proposal was rejected last week, and Napoli is set to make a £10 million offer for the 23-year-old.

Brighton have spent more than £70 million to sign Mats Wieffer, Ibrahim Osman, and Yankuba Minteh, and they have also been connected with Ferdi Kadioglu. The Turkey left-back excelled for his country at Euro 2024 and is believed to cost roughly £30 million from Fenerbahce.
