Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears’ rookie quarterback, has yet to play a down in the NFL, yet he is already guaranteed to make more money than many of his older teammates have earned during their careers.
Before training camp began, Williams signed a four-year, $39.5 million fully guaranteed contract, which included a $25.5 million signing bonus. When Williams revealed the amount of his bonus on a sneak preview of “Hard Knocks,” which was shown during Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game between the Bears and Houston Texans, some of his teammates had amusing reactions, particularly backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, who fell back in his seat and writhed in shock.
It’s easy to understand why Bagent had such a strong reaction to Williams’ revelation. Only $250,000 of the 24-year-old’s three-year, $2.72 million rookie contract is guaranteed, and he received only a $25,000 signing bonus, according to Spotrac.
