JUST IN : Experts pick out reasons behind Coco Gauff’s recent struggles

The American has had early exits in recent events. Coco Gauff’s performances on the grass have not gone as planned in recent months, leaving fans wondering what’s causing the American’s slump.

Since winning the doubles title at the French Open earlier this year, the 20-year-old has been unable to advance past the first rounds of multiple events. It’s a far cry from the finals, where fans and commentators think Gauff should compete. Gauff was defeated by Emma Navarro at Wimbledon, and she was unable to beat Donna Vekic in the Olympics, despite being rated 21 spots lower.

Those troubles continued at the Canadian Open, when she was eliminated in the third round, and Gauff just fell in the round of 32 in Cincinnati to world No. 34 Yulia Putintseva.Defending champ Coco Gauff loses at Cincinnati Open

Factors contributing to Gauff’s troubles
The topic of Gauff’s problems was discussed on Tennis Channel, with John Wertheim being questioned about what could be causing the bad play.

“I don’t know if it is her game or just sort of her mental approach,” he told me.”I believe you tell her that you are not defending a US Open championship; those points are gone.

“You’re attempting to create. You are attempting to start something. You want to start building. Last year, she had so much momentum.

Entering New York. There is really little right now. In sports, fortunes can shift quickly. We’ve seen it with Coco, both good and terrible. But, certainly, 16 of the last 18 points is not how you want to go out before defending your one important victory.” Former player Monica Puig also commented on the situation, saying, “For Coco, this is the first time she is defending three major titles back to back. Perhaps this is impacting her mental space.

“This is something that she has to deal with and she is young and I’m glad she is learning these lessons now rather than later.”
