Turner is widely regarded as having fouled rival striker Yoane Wissa in the second half of their 1-1 draw at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon. Bees manager Thomas Frank and pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink both agreed it was a “clear penalty.”
Turner himself was concerned, stating in a post-match interview that he was “glad” VAR didn’t interfere and send things from “bad to worse” for the US international. “It was a bad start for me in the second half in general,” Turner said to NBC Sports. “The ball was slow. I couldn’t get it off my feet, and [Wissa] was putting a lot of pressure on me.
“I was nervous, but I tried to hold back as much as I could because I knew he was going to win.” I’m delighted VAR didn’t step in because that would have made things even worse for me.
“But I’m proud of myself, too, for how I handled the rest of the game.”
Turner stated of the goal he let up and the game as a whole, “Personally, it feels like two [points] dropped, but at the end of the day, you have to take the positives.”
“When I looked in the mirror after scoring the first goal, I knew I had to be better for my teammates, especially in that moment right after getting the red card.”
“For us to concede in the manner that we did, I certainly bear that burden.” The response was incredible, with some incredible individual plays down the stretch. In this league, every point counts. It seems like two dropped, but it’s a strange one.”
